It's an interesting read but he makes the classic mistake of focusing on the functionality instead of the data. Networks are governed by data, not functionality. He writes about potential functionality; Gmail on your desktop, iTunes on the web, Flickr on your desktop and Word on the web, but doesn't mention the world where documents, photos, videos, spreadsheets and bookmarks are publicly available and enhanced by the network. That's where tomorrow's browser and tomorrow's OS will be.

There is a book about Cascading Style Sheets that I find helpful and unique. It is Dan Cederholm's Web Standards Solutions and the reason it is so helpful is that it focuses on what markup to use as much as on how to get your style sheets right. Learning to use style sheets is a bit tricky and getting the markup right is one part of the trick. So I highly recommend this book if you're just getting into style sheets or if you've tried before without success.

Here's the best explanation of "API" I've seen. After all, XUL lets you build the user interface as if it was a web page. That means Google could build a browser service that allows the user to set browser preferences as if they were search preferences [google.com] or Gmail preferences. Firefox would then render the browser interface according to your personal preferences. If you like your back button to be 500x500 pixels large that's just a setting. If you want a blue background for your browser menus that's just another setting. If you want a Gmail interface that's even richer than what's currently available...well then Firefox is the answer and Google probably don't have to alter the code that much since Gmail and XUL both use Javascript.
A browser service would also make more business sense since it gives people incentive to switch browser to Firefox, taking control away from Microsoft, without tying Google's future options in how to serve users."
Update: No one has bothered to grade the post or even read it. I mean read it, it's so full of insight and perspective. If someone knows which version of MSN Search that's up now please send a message. I don't think it's the legendary version nr 3 but this is starting to look like a real competitor to Google. I've written before that people will choose whatever search service has the best search results, it's no more complex than that. They are all moving towards using the same Internet protocols the rest of us use. The differentiations are accidental and temporary. The only differences are in how they connect to their customer. For wired connections it doesn't really matter if they use fiber or copper. You can get the same servers on either though, for now, copper is not normally used for television though that was the original purpose of DSL. Cellular companies do deploy towers but they are connected using the same wired infrastructure. The TV broadcast industry is becoming irrelevant because their one-way delivery system cannot provide effective connectivity.
The commoditization of the transport is making it increasingly difficult to make money just because you own the pipe. The cable industries have a long history of owning the content and demanding a share in companies whose signals they deign to carry. As gatekeepers they have the ability to command a high fee for passage. The problem is that the scarcity is going away and with the shift to narrowcasting (as in Video on Demand) there is no scarcity."

Brilliant. Were Dean followers so pleased with the way things were going that they didn't bother to turn up at the Iowa caucus? Clay has found a connection between the Iowa caucus results and social software:
"When I was 19, I remember seeing a bunch of guys in a parking lot in New Jersey absolutely rocking out to Twisted Sister at top volume, “Oh we’re not gonna take it, No, we ain’t gonna take it, Oh we’re not gonna take it anymo-o-o-o-ore” and I remember thinking the song was using up the energy that would otherwise go into rebellion.
Just rocking out to Twisted Sister so hard, and feeling so good about it, made those guys feel like they’d already stood up to The Man, making it less likely that they would actually do so in the real world, when the time came. People seem very assured that Google will stay on top for a looong time, that their search is just too good and the simplicity of the interface and their goodness and bla bla bla. I think MS might change the search landscape quite quickly. The reason is that people go to the search engine that delivers the best results, period. That's the reason Google rules and that's what it takes to become the global search king. The Best Search Results!
Now if you think it's hard to deliver better search results than Google you're right, it is. BUT, there are many promising ways to improve search and I find user context and user knowledge the two most interesting. If you know what context the user is in when she performs a search you can filter out the stuff that doesn't belong and if you know how much the user knows about a certain topic there are many ways to sort the results that will enhance the results for the user. So delivering better search results is not impossible and I'm sure MS will think of some things that Google hasn't thought about. I don't like the thought but I won't go into denial just because the truth is a bit uncomfortable.

Here's why Scotty will be able to beam you up.
Here's why Scotty won't be able to beam you up.

I wrote a comment at Keith Pleas weblog in reply to another comment that stated:
"Because cross-platform is a silly concept that only works on paper. The reason for it is that Bush is killing democracy. What they are telling us is that their opinion, their way of solving things, their modus operandi is what will rule this world. The Bush government is taking away my freedom to live the way I choose and I can't vote for or against them so in effect they are forcing me to live in a way that they choose. Thus, you are advocating a return to pre-civilized society. Your judgements about what is threatening are completely subjective and your willingness to sacrifice others to benefit yourself is frightening. What if you managed to create humanity in the image of your beliefs? Modern civilization would collapse and humanity would revert back to small hunterer-gatherer societies each looking after their own. The mark of civilization and morality is that we have developed alternatives to violence. Recourse to violence is only justified when violence is brought against you first.
Your beliefs lead to a conundrum: what if the person you were to kill with that button found out and decided to kill you before he could be killed? Who is in the right? You who are trying to save your family, or the stranger who is trying to save his life? Don't you see the huge problem with this moral relativism?
